I wanted to try to rank some of the best prepper websites on the net, as I check the survivaltop50.com site on occasion to see where I rank.

That site ranks websites that have asked to be ranked by giving Google PageRank a maximum of 10 points and Alexa ranking a total of ten points.  Beyond that I have no idea how they came up with the rankings.

What I did was to give both metrics a ranking of 100 – because I felt that since Alexa ranks number in the millions – and you don’t begin to get recognized until you hit at least a ranking of 1 million (the lower is better, which is the opposite of PageRank) I felt dividing up a spread of 1 million points by 10 was not that accurate.

I created a list where an Alexa ranking of 1 million earned one point, with each drop of 10000 spots earning 1 more point, so if your Alexa rank was 10000 or lower you would get the maximum points.

For PageRank, it was much simpler, I just added a zero to the toolbar rank.

I added the numbers together and divided by 2 to get a ranking from 0-50.

If two sites had the same ranking, the site with the lower Alexa score placed higher.

I think this is a little more accurate – the top 10 pretty much stayed the same, but sites that have not been updated since 2011 dropped way down.  I assume that’s because Alexa measures traffic, and it updates daily, where PR is a search engine algorithm and it only changes every 3 months or so.

If anyone other than  me cares, let me know and I will update this on a more regular basis.  If no one is interested, I will just keep this as a one and done post – as it really doesn’t matter who the cool kids are, as long as everyone can find good content.
