Why the NRA

I have been an NRA recruiter for as long  as I have been an instructor – while I do not agree with every decision the NRA has made, I don’t know any organization with which I have always agreed with 100%.  I think every proud Citizen should join the NRA.

That being said there are a lot of benefits of and reasons why you should to join the NRA (and I will tell you all about them here.)

In my mind there are two reasons for joining the NRA that trump any financial benefits – the NRA’s Training Department and their 2nd Amendment advocacy.

Many people do not realize that the NRA was founded after the Civil War to ensure that the citizen’s of this great country had the skills necessary to defend it.

I wish that the training division was able to do its job without the legislative section – as NRA basic firearms training is THE national standard – most states that have carry permit training requirements either base their training standards on the NRA courses, or use NRA certified instructors to perform the training.  In my state of Tennessee, becoming an NRA instructor is the easiest way for a citizen to gain certification as a handgun carry permit instructor (email me for details).

Unfortunately, in today’s political climate training an armed citizenry is not enough, we must also work together to elect and support public officials who desire freedom and the continuation of our Constitutional Republic.  I have to wonder about the motives of anyone that both desires political power and the disarmament of anyone that they claim to serve.

It is my belief that hardworking Americans that understand the proper role of an armed populace as the unmentioned fourth and most powerful separation of powers in a check and balance system outnumber both those that either have a nefarious underlying reason for citizen disarmament and their unwitting pawns that desire unearned safety at the expense of invaluable personal freedom.

Personally, I think of the small yearly membership fee as a little bit of preventative maintenance – its an extra oil change.  I support the NRA so that they have the numbers to go to Washington and be heard.  I don’t think that the anti-gun crowd will ever be swayed by the NRA and become pro-freedom, but I do think they are highly aware of the numbers.

If you don’t care about all that, your $35 membership fee does come with a lot of extra benefits like:

An official NRA Membership ID card

$10,000 of Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage at NO COST to you.
