Hints on the Development of Small Water Power document is a great follow up to yesterday’s Harnessing the Small Stream. It defines and expands on many of the terms and concepts from that PDF.
I think it is easier to read and is less technical while still providing great information. This is probably because it was written as a pamphlet to help landowners actually build and develop micro hydro power.
Be aware though that this is an old document and comes from a company that manufactured turbines so in the end there is a bit of advertising.
I do not think this document has enough information to stand alone. However, as additional information, it is very useful.
Hints on the Development of Small Water Power is only an 11 page advertising pamphlet, so please keep that in mind if you are planning to download a bunch of material. On the other hand, it is a great basic document that explains fall or head in an easy to understand manner.
Hints on the Development of Small Water Power covers the following to some degree or another:
- Fall and how to determine it
- Measurement of Water Flow
- The Effect of Pondage
- Estimating Power Requirements
- Types of Electric Generators
- Types and Styles of Turbines
- Trash Racks and Head Gates
- Old Remodeled Plants
- Using Engineers
The section of Turbine styles covers a page or two and is the largest section of the document, this is not surprising, as it is from a company that made turbines.
