This report presents the results of an-in depth survey of solar powered water pumps, solar cookers and wood burning stoves.
The purpose of this survey was to collect, organize, and disseminate pertinent information on available solar power technology that will benefit the people of less developed countries of the world.
I am a proponent of solar power, but like Steven Harris I don’t necessarily think using solar for electrical generation is the most efficient use of the sun.
It is inefficient to take the sun, convert it to DC electricity, convert that to chemical energy in a battery, then convert it back to DC power to transform it to AC power, to convert back to heat in a stove, fridge, washer or whatever.
Every time you convert energy from one form to another you get loss.
It is much simpler to take the heat of the sun and use it to cook. However, solar power is reliable and the amount available over the year is easily planned for.
I like solar and have several panels of my own, and I continually use documents like this PDF to ensure I am using solar power in the more efficient way possible.A State of the Art Survey of Solar Powered Irrigation Pumps Solar Cookers and Wood Burning Stoves
