Amateur Rocket Motor Construction

One hobby I would like to do more of is Pyrotechnics. I love fireworks and I love diy projects, but unfortunately the regulations on storage keeps my playing to a minimum. However, even if I don’t get to build as much sparkly smoky things as I like, I still enjoy reading about them

Amateur rocket motor construction is an awesome book. It is full of diagrams and instructions as well as recipes to make several tested rocket designs.

Not only does the book have lots of reference material, it even has a couple “improvised” ingredients – recipes included use common chemicals found at hardware stores including ingredients from gopher gassers and stump removers.

This is a very well written guide to something I am very fond of.  I even bought a kit from skylighter.com that allows me to build my own amateur rocket motors whenever I want so that I can continue to play rockets.

As soon as I figure out the legalities (not because it is dangerous or bad but because of overregulation) I want to use the rocket motors to make white star clusters for signalling.  I have a pretty good idea how they are made, and can do it safely but since it is a rocket with a “charge” I don’t want to get hit with a weapons of mass destruction arrest for doing something to potentially save a life.

You have to love cowards making laws and enforcing them with thugs…

The Complete Walker III

When I was growing up, I lived on a state park and spent all my free time in the woods. What time I didn’t spend in the woods was spent with my nose in a book.

I checked The Complete Walker III out from the local library so many times that I filled up several of the little glued in checkout cards.

This book is jammed full of great backpacking and walking tips. I love how he made some of his own equipment and shows how to both lighten your load as the hit on your wallet when buying gear.

If your a prepper, and want to build a bug out bag, then this is a very useful reference.

The Complete Walker III is not the newest edition, and that is a fine book also, but being older, this book is cheaper used, and I have an emotional attachment to it, as I did spend so many hours dreaming over it’s pages.

I have always wanted to hike the Appalachian trail, and this book fueled that dream.  I can’t call it a goal, as I don’t have any plans to actually do it, but it would be something awesome to do.

The Complete Modern Blacksmith

If your a diy’er, prepper, aspiring blacksmith, or just interested in cool books, then this is a deal. The Complete Modern Blacksmith is actually a collection of three books. (The Modern Blacksmith, The Recycling, Use, and Repair of Tools, and The Making of Tools).

I had already purchased the out of print The Making of Tools, and was impressed with the quality of the book. This book covers everything you need to know to make basic tools – chisels, pliers, screwdrivers, tempering of metals, forges, how to set up a workshop.

If you are the least bit interested in blacksmithing or working with metal you owe it to yourself to purchase this book.  I have used this book quite extensively as I attempt to learn how to make and repair my own tools, set up my shop, and learn to blacksmith.

You will be hard pressed to find a more information of this caliber at the price.

This book is a go to source of information, it covers all sorts of good information needed to both set up a shop, equip it, and use it.  I love the making of tools part of the book.  I used it to mash together the foundry tongs I made.

The Complete Book of Butchering, Smoking, Curing, and Sausage Making

One self-reliant project that I enjoy, but haven’t got around to videotaping is home sausage making. I believe that the ability to cure and store meat is a vital skill to anyone interested in producing a majority of their own food (vegans and veggies excepted). I can deal with a lot of things, but a … Read more

I discovered The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing at a local discount book store, and now that I own it, I would happily pay full price for a new copy if I should ever lose or destroy this copy.

This is not a recipe book, although it does contain some recipes. This is a troubleshooting guide, as well as a reference packed full of charts and tables.

If you want to know the chemistry behind your brewing, become consistent in the flavor of your finished product, or just start brewing, then I recommend The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing.

I personally spend more time making wine and mead, than I do brewing beer, and this guide is geared toward brewing beer, this book has enough depth that it is useful for all three pursuits.

When I started this site I was fond of saying I liked to make alcohol, but I didn’t really like drinking it, but here lately, I am starting to turn the other way.

I think as life progresses we change, and we begin to adopt different attitudes based upon what we choose to let into our life.  For me its more drinking and screwing around with little projects, with others I have no idea.

Not saying this is a bad thing, but it does make you wonder what you are allowing in your life, because just as it is true that when one door closes another opens, it is also true that as you walk through a door you lock another behind you.

As I said, I like this book, and I bet if you like home-brewing, you will like it also.
