So many students perceive college as a way to have fun, make friends, and live interesting experiences. Only so few students are seeing college as the most important time of their lives because of the self-growth opportunities that they may encounter.

I am a veteran military martial arts instructor. I teach kids how to fight to prevent unfortunate life-threatening events. Since I started tutoring college students, I have realized that martial arts training is the most effective way to build strong characters out of fragile teenagers.

In today’s post, I’m sharing some of the most famous army martial arts that students may start practicing to learn how to self-defend, but also to improve their character and shape their personality.

Marine Corps Martial Arts Program

The Marine Corps Martial Arts is a special combat system created by the US Marine Corps. The purpose of the program is to combine existing and new close quarters and hand-to-hand fighting techniques with team-building and morale functions.

This particular martial arts program teaches its practitioners unarmed combat techniques, joint locks, weapon drills, grappling, and more.

The Marine Corps Martial Arts is not just about fighting. It also stresses character development, morality, and mental growth. Teamwork, leadership, and the responsible use of force are some of the most important elements of this martial arts program.

There are five belt levels: tan, grey, green, brown, and black. Each of these levels teaches you specific techniques that prepare you for any possible life-threatening situation.

As a student, you can seek civilian marine corps martial arts programs around your location and enroll. If that is not a possibility, you can study plenty of techniques online. The theory is available, yet you must master the practice.

Krav Maga

Krav Maga is one of the most popular self-defense systems utilized by law-enforcement personnel and military all over the world. There’s a good reason why this military martial art is so popular, and that is because it teaches you how to quickly react to threatening and unexpected situations even if you’re unarmed.

Krav Maga focuses on real-world situations like street fighting, but also teaches you how to react to totally random life-threatening situations; e.g., when someone points a gun at you.

Some of the principles and ideas of Krav Maga are:

  • Simultaneous defense and attack
  • Developing physical aggression
  • Counterattacking as soon as possible
  • Leveraging any objects at hand to hit your target
  • Attacking the body’s most vulnerable points (neck, solar plexus, eyes, ribs, knees, fingers, liver)
  • Awareness of surroundings to quickly identify additional attackers, escape routes, or useful objects that can help you defend

Krav Maga is the fighting style that teaches you how to react by developing instinctive responses to dangerous situations. Systema

Systema is the KGB’s secretive martial art developed in the 18th century by Cossacks (Ukrainian warriors). This almost-deadly fighting style teaches practitioners how to balance their physical strength with the natural flow of inner energy.

More specifically, when following the Systema principles, fighters use 25% physical strength and 75% flow of energy. Systema teachings are now available to civilians from all over the world.

There are three components that create a “True Warrior” (an expression for a fighter that masters the Systema fighting style):

  • Strong Spirit
  • Combat Skill
  • Healthy Body

There’s a strong principle behind this famous self-defense system, and that is “non-destruction.” The main goal of this martial art is to ensure that your attitudes, skills, and training are not fully damaging the psyche and the body of you or your fighting partners.

Sanshou

Sanshou (or Sanda) is a fighting style developed by the Chinese military. It is considered to be one of the most effective military martial arts styles that focuses on intense combat training. Self-defense, grappling, and kung fu are three essential fighting elements that comprise the Chinese-based martial arts style.

More specifically, Sanshou combines traditional Kung fu techniques with today’s modern combat fighting sports: full-contact kickboxing, a fighting style that involves successive kicks and punches, merged with sweeps, knee strikes, takedowns, wrestling, throws, and kick catches

You can practice Shanshou both at a professional and amateur level. If you’re an amateur, you’ll wear a protective gear made of body armor, head-guard, and boxing gloves. A match lasts three two-rounds. The more throwdowns and strikes you manage to land the more points you acquire. If you win two consecutive rounds, you win the game.

As for the professional Sanshou matches, the games are being held in boxing rings. There is no protective gear, and the sport is similar to MMA. There are a lot of MMA fighters who leverage Sanshou principles to gain competitive advantage during fights.

Defendu

Defendu (or Close Quarters Combat System) is a relatively modern martial art developed by Eric Sykes and William Fairbairn prior to WW2. This fighting style was is an unarmed combat system that was mostly taught to Allied troops in World War 2 but also to the Office of Strategic Services agents.

The “parenthood” of Defendu are fighting styles such as Wrestling, Jujutsu, Judo, Savate, Boxing, street fighting, and other martial arts styles.

After the war, many techniques have been lost. Fortunately, they’ve been recovered in time, so you can try your luck and see if any classes are held nearby your location.

Lerdrit

Lerdrit is a special type of martial art that “borrows” the “ugliest” moves from the Muay Thai fighting style via an unarmed combat mentality.

Lerdrit is essentially a close combat fighting style that utilize forward pressure, knees, open hand strikes, kicks, elbows, grappling, and locking. Most of the strikes that Lerdrit teaches are pointed towards critical pressure points that are meant to quickly “finish” the opponent, making him unable to fight.

The main principle of this fighting system is to quickly unbalance the opponent and finish him with powerful and quick strikes.

Final Words

A military fighting style that is properly learned and practiced can save lives. Moreover, when you master a martial art, you will never feel scared to walk alone. If you’re walking your girlfriend home and three punks attack you, they won’t know what hit them. If you ever experience tough situations and random attacks, you’ll know how to deal with them.

Additionally, by mastering a military martial art, you’ll become a “solid” individual who will present more character traits than most people.
