The Complete Modern Blacksmith

Book Review: The Complete Modern Blacksmith
Buy at Amazon

If your a diy’er, prepper, aspiring blacksmith, or just interested in cool books, then this is a deal. The Complete Modern Blacksmith is actually a collection of three books. (The Modern Blacksmith, The Recycling, Use, and Repair of Tools, and The Making of Tools).

I had already purchased the out of print The Making of Tools, and was impressed with the quality of the book. This book covers everything you need to know to make basic tools – chisels, pliers, screwdrivers, tempering of metals, forges, how to set up a workshop.

If you are the least bit interested in blacksmithing or working with metal you owe it to yourself to purchase this book.  I have used this book quite extensively as I attempt to learn how to make and repair my own tools, set up my shop, and learn to blacksmith.

You will be hard pressed to find a more information of this caliber at the price.

This book is a go to source of information, it covers all sorts of good information needed to both set up a shop, equip it, and use it.  I love the making of tools part of the book.  I used it to mash together the foundry tongs I made.

  1. Great info. Thanks for the link. Hey I found you looking for a quick tablespoon to AN receipe for long distance reactive targets. On that topic if your anywhere near a rural area your local farm supplier should be able to order you 50 pounds of 34-0-0 fertilizer. Cost for it is around $20 and much cheaper than instant cold packs. Works just as good as the commercial stuff.

    • Except now ammonium nitrate as fertilizer has been almost universally replaced by urea nitrate in feed stores. As a matter of fact, there is a homeland security initiative (and a toll free number) that tells fertilizer clerks to report anyone that attempts to buy ammonium nitrate when given urea nitrate…
